Cultures

Being a primer on the cultures of the world of Leeland.

Elfes:

Elf, Elfes, Elfin / Elfish, Elfinly / Elfishly.

Common appearance:  Yellow skin.  Small in stature – about 5 feet tall.  Slim body types.   Rounded heads and pointed chins.  Ears are normal Human size with small points.

Where they are: At the western border of Elfland is a zone called No Man’s Land.  Where they have pulled back into Elf Central to maintain infrastructure and for mutual defense. Mostly abandoned during the Blight./Plague.

There are two major classes of Elfin families—the upper class, who are divided into familial Houses, and the lower class, which have families but no House of their own (a House being as much a charter for research and business as it is an extended family unit). Houses of the Nouveaux Familles come from a mixture of cut-off branches of the family and from servants creating their own upper-class House to fill in the gap.  Also come from marriages, where two Elfes marry and intermingle their research into a new, separate House.

Most servants for the upper-class households come from lower-class families, although with the loss of Elf-power during the Plague some Houses have been making do with Humans or importing Kobolds.

Elfes have much more formal and complex relationships that require more formality.  Also Elfes are often just snooty.  “What family are you? / Est-ce que vous êtes de quelle famille? / Quelle famille est-tu?” is a common greeting phrase.  Elfes proudly wear the family crest somewhere.   Typical Elfin attitude applies also to academics -- Academic professorial background is expected in better families.  Academic so a lot of things like weapons’ training is in competition,  not in field.  Elfin attitude to etiquette is also expected in the better families.  They all have impeccable manners, as well as uppercrust eating habits such as multiple courses, eating from china with silverware, etc.
